Understanding Cognitive Distortions in ADHD & Anxiety

Cognitive distortions are unhelpful thinking patterns that can significantly impact mental health. For individuals with ADHD, these distortions often contribute to increased anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional dysregulation (Brown, 2005). Recognising and addressing these negative thought patterns can help build resilience, confidence, and overall wellbeing (Beck, 1976).

At Allied Health for Wellness, we specialise in supporting neurodivergent individuals through evidence-based strategies to reframe negative thoughts and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Common Cognitive Distortions in ADHD & Anxiety

People with ADHD and anxiety are more prone to cognitive distortions due to differences in executive functioning, emotional regulation, and working memory (Barkley, 2015). Here are some common distortions and how they affect daily life:

  1. All-or-Nothing Thinking – Seeing things in black and white, without recognising the middle ground (e.g., “If I can’t do it perfectly, I’ve failed”).
  2. Catastrophising – Expecting the worst possible outcome in any situation (e.g., “If I make a mistake at work, I’ll get fired”).
  3. Overgeneralisation – Assuming that one negative event will continue to happen repeatedly (e.g., “I always mess things up”).
  4. Personalisation – Believing that everything others do or say is a direct response to you (e.g., “They didn’t text back because they’re mad at me”).
  5. Emotional Reasoning – Assuming that feelings always reflect reality (e.g., “I feel like a failure, so I must be one”).
  6. Labelling – Defining yourself by mistakes instead of recognising them as isolated incidents (e.g., “I’m just lazy”).

Strategies to Challenge Negative Thought Patterns

At Allied Health for Wellness, we support clients in challenging cognitive distortions through:

Awareness and Identification – Recognising when cognitive distortions occur and naming them.

Cognitive Reframing – Replacing negative thoughts with more balanced, realistic ones.

Mindfulness and Self-Compassion – Practicing self-kindness and present-moment awareness to break the cycle of negative thinking.

ADHD Coaching and Counselling – Providing neuroaffirming strategies to build resilience and self-confidence.

Behavioural Techniques – Using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to reshape thought patterns.
